The delegation of mammologists and surgical oncologists in Lviv oblast actively participated in training at the St. Raphael "SCANMED" hospital in Krakow within the implementation of "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumor technologies in the Lviv oblast" subproject under the joint "Serving People, Improving Health" Project of the World Bank the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine.

Training at the St. Raphael "SCANMED" hospital was designed for 3 groups of physicians: mammologists and surgical oncologists, radiologists, and gynaecologists.

Prof. Piotr Skotnicki presented an overview of the history of breast cancer surgery with comments on the trends in Europe and in Poland; Dr. Krzysztof Korneta cited statistics on the incidence, neglected cases, and early diagnosis of breast cancer in Poland, and changes in trends in this type of cancer.

The discussion held between Lviv physicians and Polish colleagues on approaches to the age factor in terms of breast cancer screening, specializations of physicians who treat cancer (in Poland, in case of breast cancer intervention may be done by gynaecologists, general surgeons, and surgical oncologists as well) was particularly interesting. According to the Polish professors, there are so many difficult aspects and dynamic changes in approaches to breast cancer, that it should be addresses by special surgical oncologists who treat this type of cancer closely with chemotherapists and radiation therapists.

A colleague, Dr. Lukasz Wohadlo, considered current features of breast cancer treatment depending on the molecular types and stages. He also pointed the peculiarities of funding such treatment in Poland, as well as new trends in treatment.

Polish colleagues have demonstrated a number of live operations in the operating room, specifically organ-saving interventions (quadrantectomy, subcutaneous mastectomy) with removal of the sentinel lymph node by its mapping using gamma-camera for radiopharmaceuticals.

Polish physicians are distinguished by confident skills, knowledge, and clear sensible approaches to the breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, in particular: masterly use of ultrasound, localization of tumors during scintigraphy, filigree surgical technique.

Professional openness, honesty, and amiability ensured the most comfortable and interesting atmosphere during the training sessions.

Training coordinator - Dr. Orest Tril, surgical oncologist and the Deputy Head physician in the Lviv Oblast-level State Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre.
