Breast and cervical cancer screening: opportunities to be applied in the Sambir district

Series of the training sessions "Breast and cervical cancer screening: significance, features, and opportunities in the Lviv oblast" have been initiated in Sambir on October 21, 2016.

The training sessions consist of a series of reports:

- Breast cancer screening as a means used in preventive oncology- Deputy Head physician, surgical oncologist, Orest Tril;

- Radiation diagnostics of breast cancer - Head of the Computed Tomography Department, radiologist, Yuriy Mylyan;

- Evaluation in accordance with BI-RADS (BreastImagingReportingandDataSystem) - radiologist, Mariana Pryima;

- Cervical cancer screening - gynaecologic oncologist, Svitlana Struk;

- Breast cancer prevention and screening. Risk Factors - surgical oncologist, Volodymyr Ludchak.

The objective of the meeting held with the medical staff of all levels and specialties (family physicians, physicians, pediatricians, gynaecologists, radiologists, etc.) was to promote the effectiveness and importance of screening, while inviting as many women as possible to participate in the examination of the female health by the doctors of the "primary contact" ( gynaecological examination with cytology and mammographic examinations).

By 85-100%, the effectiveness of cancer treatment depends on early detection. It is early detection of cancer in people that screening is focused on, as when there are symptoms, identifying pathologies is made via early diagnosis.

The result of screening is to reduce mortality and to improve quality of life after treatment.

As part of the "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumour technologies in Lviv oblast" Subproject, breast and cervical cancer screening is being implemented.

One out of six multi-regional screening centres in the oblast has been established in the Sambir district on the basis of the antenatal clinics, and which will carry out female screening in the Sambir, Staryi Sambir, and Turka districts.

Breast cancer is the most common disease in women and is the leading cause of death from cancer.

Screening saves lives!
