Screening does not presume installation of expensive equipment, but is rather focused on a well-established cooperation of physicians and patients.
In order to establish screening work, a mass cohort examination of women oriened towards identifying the risk group, and in order to prevent the disease, it is important that each participant of the program should understand one's role and function.
Cervical cancer screening in the Lviv oblast has certainly functioned before, as during the examination of women, all gynecologists necessarily took the material for cytological examination. However, such a work was not systematic and screening itself was opportunistic (mostly, at a self-referral of a woman).
Now it's important that cervical and breast cancer screening be systemic and function on a permanent basis.
In order to establish the work of gynecologists, who along with the family physicians intially serve as the primary screening link associated with the pathway of a patient, the "cluster" meetings of gynecologists from the coverage area of the appropriate screening centres took place at the multi-regional screening centre in Lviv and in Stryi.
On the basis of the Lviv communal municipal clinical polyclinic, the heads of antenatal clinics from Lviv had a joint meeting to coordinate the work with the municipal screening centre. Natalia Popovych, who is responsible for the work of the municipal screening centre, announced that the invitations for women to participate in screening were disseminated, and the referral to the multi-regional screening centre was made for women in the age between 45 and 65 to undergo the mammography screening.
The same meeting took place at the multi-regional screening centre in Stryi. The heads of antenatal clinics, district gynecologic oncologists, and the heads of the polyclinics, as well as the head physicians of the hospitals in Skole, Mykolaiv, Stryi, Zhydachiv districts, and the city of Morshyn and Novyi Rozdil were familiarized with the work of the screening centre; they visited the mammography offices and became acquainted with the person responsible for the work of the screening centre, Olena Zelinska.
In addition, at the meeting held in Stryi, the gynecologic oncologist from the Lviv Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre, Natalia Savrun, also told about the possibilities of the cancer treatment centre, specifically about the liquid-based cytology, which was introduced as part of the "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumor technologies in Lviv oblast" Subproject.
These were the first coordination meetings of gynecologists held to set up screening. In the future, similar "cluster" meetings will take place in all multi-regional screening centres.
See you at the upcoming meetings!
