"Mortality from cardiovascular diseases in Vinnytsia region is one of the highest in Ukraine, — said Valerii Korovii. — The decision to conduct such an operation was strategically right, and I am pleased that this is just the first step."
Since 1960, when Mykola Amosov conducted the first open heart surgery, his followers at the National Institute have conducted nearly 190 thousand such interventions over 56 years.
"Over the last year, 4700 open-heart surgeries were conducted at Amosov Institute, postoperative mortality being 1.3%. This is even a better rate than in Europe. Our ideology is to spread this experience in Ukraine, — said Vasil Lazoryshynets, Director of Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, corresponding member of the NAMS of Ukraine. — It is known that within the investment project of the World Bank, a new cardiac center will be constructed in Vinnytsia in 3-4 years. However, we should start preparing specialists right now, so they can conduct up to 700 similar surgeries a year."
Vinnytsia National Medical University undertook to enlarge the number of specialists in the field of regional cardiac surgery. Its Director, Vasil Moroz, said that for this purpose, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery was opened about two months ago. And Yurii Mostovyi, Professor, Head of the University's Department of Internal Disease Propaedeutics, said: until a new personnel is formed, we need to change the stereotypes of medical professionals about the trends of care delivery.
"Over the 8 years of operation of the Cardiac Center in Vinnytsia, dozens of conferences and trainings have been held for medical staff. As a consequence, we operate 70% of patients with infarction. We accept patients from the rayons, and we are able to deliver advanced care to them", — summarized Yurii Mostovyi.
Last year was particularly successful in the activities of Vinnytsya Center and made it one of the best centers in Ukraine. Apart from coronarography and stenting, it deals with cardiac surgery. It is extremely necessary for Vinnytsia patients, thousands of which are annually in need of such interventions.
"For this purpose, 6 cardiac surgeons and 6 anesthesiologists alternately attend training at Amosov Institute, - said Volodymyr Gladkykh, the Director of the Center, — therefore, the first open heart operation performed in Vinnytsia oblast is not a single case, but the beginning of routine activities".
A cardiac surgeon can independently operate hearts only after (s)he has performed 100 similar operations with the participation of experienced colleagues. At this point, specialists from Amosov Institute help Vinnytsia physicians, and after the press conference, they will begin consultations at the Centre. Patients that can be operated in Vinnytsia will be scheduled for interventions, and those who have complicated cases will be sent to Kyiv.
