The "Cervical and breast pathology prevention Days. Early detection and the implementation of effective anti-tumor technologies" campaign will be held in the Lviv oblast between November 21 and December 2, during which all women in the Lviv oblast will be urged to undergo examination by a gynecologist and mammologist, - these issues were discussed at the press conference by Orest Tril, Deputy Head physician in the Lviv State Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre, and by Khrystyna Pak, "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumour technologies in Lviv oblast" Subproject Management Consultant.
Nowadays, the mortality rate associated with cancer is ranked second only to cardiovascular diseases. Since 1993, the incidence of cancer in the Lviv oblast has been gradually increasing.
According to Orest Tril, Deputy Head physician in the Lviv Oblast-level Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre, among the newly diagnosed (833) cases in 2015, breast cancer was first identified at I-II stage - 78%, at III stage - 13,6%, and at IV stage - 6,1%. 7.5% of patients (cases when cancer was detected at later stages) did not survive one year from the time of diagnosis.
As for cervical cancer, 236 cases were first diagnosed: at I-II stage - 85.3%, at III stage - 8,2%, at IV stage - 5,6%, at the undefined stage - 0.9%. 16,1% of patients did not survive one year from the time of diagnosis.
Already in 9 months of 2016, breast cancer has been first detected in 561 women (77% at I-II stage), cervical cancer - 164 cases (80% at I-II stage).
In general, the two major problems typical for both the Lviv oblast and Ukraine in general are late diagnosis and high cancer-related mortality rate, as well as significant cost and complexity of treatment at a later stage. There is a need to use a complete set of expensive methods for combined treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy).
The annually held event now has a peculiarity, since it is held under the auspices of the joint World Bank's and the Ministry of Health care of Ukraine "Serving People, Improving Health" Project, specifically within the "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumor technologies in Lviv oblast" Subproject.
Firstly, the first contract agreement for the supply of medical equipment (MRI scanner) has been already signed within the Project, specifically with Diatech SA (Switzerland); its contract price being over 1.3 mln. USD. In the coming months, agreements will be signed for the supply of ultrasound devices, CT, SPECT/ CT, surgical equipment, and mammography devices.
Secondly, starting from today (21.11.2016), information campaign in mass media begins, which is aimed at bringing women's attention to their health, in order to turn an annual examination into a habit. Video and audio spots will be presented, which have been carefully developed by media professionals and psychologists to "reach out" to each of us. We devote a lot of time to appearance, life, and harmony in the family; however, without health all our routine affairs are worthless.
Thirdly, scientific and practical medical conferences for gynecologists (November, 23) and radiologists (November, 30) will be held in the framework of the campaign on November 23 and November 30 at "Suputnyk" hotel.
Fourth, doctors at the Lviv Oblast-level Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre will hold a series of visits to the district hospitals of the Lviv oblast in order to carry out examination and advise patients on the sites, as well as to hold workshops with involvement of the local medical personnel. Namely:
Zhovkva district - 22.11
