In order to get familiarized with European practice pertaining to preventive oncology and major trends in screening for of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, an interactive workshop “Strengthening Cancer Control Program in Ukraine” was held for Ukrainian doctors at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The workshop included an exchange of views as to the European caner control and cancer control programs in Ukraine. The agenda of the event was particularly relevant in the framework of the subproject "Preventive oncology and the implementation of effective anti-tumor technologies in Lviv oblast", as it included the topics of preventive medicine, namely: lifestyle, nutrition, obesity, and the incidence risks pertaining to cancer; infections and cancer; implications for cancer prevention; the incidence of cancer in Eastern Europe caused by infections; Initiatives on Tobacco Control - the value for combating cancer; Vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV) in combating cervical cancer; Interactive discussion on the strategies for primary prevention in Ukraine.
The interactive workshop “Strengthening Cancer Control Program in Ukraine” was held during the 1st and 5th of February, 2016, in the framework of the procurement package # 4.2.3 "Training of respective specialists abroad", of a joint project "Serving People, Improving Health" which is being implemented with support of the World Bank and the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine, specifically the Subproject "Preventive oncology and the implement of effective anti-tumor technologies".
The workshop was held at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization in Lyon, France with the participation of health care experts from the Lviv oblast: Dr. Bogdan R. Chechotka, Head of the Health Care Department of LOSA; Dr. Orest V. Tril, Deputy Head physician at Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre; Dr. Svitlana M. Struk, Head gynaecological oncologist at Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre; Dr. Volodymyr Y. Ludchak, Deputy head for organizational work at Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics Centre; and Dr. Myroslav M. Shaban, obstetrician-gynaecologist at multi-district screening centre.
The knowledge and skills obtained will be applied during the implementation of the subproject, namely during the organization of Health schools and the implementation of workshops and training sessions for the medical personnel of the health care facilities in Lviv oblast.
A joint project "Serving People, Improving Health" which is being implemented with support of the World Bank and the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine is aimed at supporting health care reform and achieving three main objectives: combating non-communicable diseases, with emphasis on prevention; improving the quality and efficiency of medical care; optimizing and restructuring hospitals and outpatient services of the secondary level.
The project is to be implemented during 2015 and 2020 in 8 oblasts of Ukraine: Volyn, Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Zakarpattia, Poltava, Rivne, and Lviv oblasts.
The subproject "Preventive oncology and the implement of effective anti-tumor technologies" is being implemented in the Lviv oblast, which aims at improving the health care status of the female population in the Lviv oblast in combating malignant tumours.
