The Decade of prevention of arterial hypertension among

Despite of rapid development of science and technology, improvement of medical equipment, increase of the number of qualified health workers, creating new high-performance drugs, the number of the working population in Europe has been steadily declining. According to the World Health Organization, the main cause of death of the population in many economically developed countries and those, with their economies in transition, is cardiovascular disease. In Ukraine, cardiovascular diseases (diseases of the circulation system) are the most common disorders in the structure of the overall incidence of primary disability and overall mortality, as to the general population is concerned.

In forming the indicator of the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, the leading role belongs to hypertension, that makes every 3-4th adult person to suffer from. Arterial hypertension is a serious sign, which indicates the need for significant changes in lifestyle and medication.

By 1.01.2017, 425 982 patients with hypertension have been registered in Zaporizhzhia region, that is 2 918 per 10 000 of the adult population; among them urban residents are 272 537 people (2 990 per 10 000 of the adult population) and 153 445 of rural residents  (1606,9 per 10 000 of the adult population).

In order to improve the prevention of hypertension, from May 15 to May 26, 2017, there was the Decade of prevention of hypertension held in Zaporizhzhia region (hereinafter - DECADE), according to the order of Health Care Department of Zaporizhzhia Region and under the methodological support of the joint World Bank and Ministry of Health of Ukraine “Improving health in servicing people” Project.

In the framework of the DECADE, there were held: the training seminar on the basis of KU “OMTSSSZ” AB trainers, who conducted seminars on the prevention of hypertension on the basis of CPMSD for health professional workers; the procedures of  measuring blood pressure (hereinafter – JSC) and body mass index (BMI), including the public places (supermarkets, pharmacies, schools, markets), at  the survey of the population were organized by the appearances on radio, television and publications in press. Any resident of Zaporizhzhia region could have an opportunity to measure own blood pressure, height, weight for free in a convenient place and location together with getting an expert advice on lifestyle modifications, smoking cessation, the principles of nutrition, weight loss and stress management, and also getting any information about the disease. Printed materials for physicians and patients had been prepared within the joint World Bank and Ministry of Health of Zaporizhzhia Region “Improving medical care to patients with diseases of the circulatory system in Zaporizhzhia Oblast on the 2015-2017 years” sub-project.

All during the DECADE period there were carried out JSC measurements in   136 902 people, that is 9,4% of the population of Zaporizhzhia region, it’s almost every 10th resident of the area. Elevated JSC was discovered in 34,2 % of the examined patients, while 11, 59 % hadn’t ever known about their blood pressure  increase. Among those, taking antihypertensive drugs, 57,82 % found normal BP, while 42,18 %  stated ineffective medication.

The assessment of some risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, measured during the DECADE, show that 30,4% examined patients are overweight (BMI exceeds 25 k/м2), and the obesityаwas diagnosed in 1 of 3 respondents - 34,7% (waist circumference more than 94 cm more at men, and 80 cm at women); 18,7% - smokers, and 3,0% - alcohol abuse. Every 10th patient was interviewed for the top risk factors for hypertension and knowledge about them. .

Holding the DECADE, showed that the population of Zaporizhzhia region has a considerably widespread AG and especially its main factors. But in fact, the broad information campaign during the DECADE of prevention of hypertension, played a significant role in attracting people’s attention to the control of blood pressure and the importance of balanced lifestyle and drug therapy, allowing to expect the information of a fairly strong motivation for health lifestyle, in order to minimize the impact of identified risk factors.
